A clear quantitative relationship between cloud-to-ground(CG) lightning activity and terrain is the premise of evaluating the risk of lightning strikes and taking active protective measures. In order to study the correlation between CG lightning activities and terrain in Yunnan Province, two data analysis methods, mathematical statistics and data mining, are used in this paper. Through the statistical analysis of the distribution of topographic parameters and CG lightning activity parameters in the whole region of Yunnan Province, we reveal the influence of different topographic factors on the CG lightning activity. Aiming at studying the coupled effects of various topographic factors on CG lightning activities, the Apriori algorithm is used to mine terrain attribute sets that are strongly correlated with strong lightning density, and summarized the terrain scenes that are prone to lightning strikes.
