Experiment and Research on Multi-spectral Detection of Typical Defects in Composite Insulators under the Perspective of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Currently, due to the lack of researches on how the reliability of ultraviolet discharge detection of UAV is influenced by distance, and the serious shortage of infrared and ultraviolet image samples for comparative analysis, the development of multi-spectral intelligent detection technology for composite insulators is greatly restricted. In this paper, the composite insulators with three typical defects, such as mandrel rot, poor sheath-mandrel bonding and internal metal foreign body, were tested in laboratory respectively by hand-held infrared and UAV ultraviolet detection instruments under the perspective of UAV. Results show that, within the 15 meters’ "high-sensitivity distance", the ultraviolet UAV lens can maintain reliable defect identification and positioning capabilities even if the defect discharge signal is weak to the interference level; if the sheath is intact, the mandrel rotten defect will only generates heat under the operating voltage without ultraviolet discharge; if the sheath is damaged, UV discharge will occur at the edge of the heating section for mandrel rot, poor sheath-mandrel bonding and internal metal foreign body defects; the complementarity of infrared and ultraviolet detection enables the multi-spectral detection based on UAV to have good reliability under unfavorable camera angles.
