Purpose/Aim

The transmission capacity of submarine cables is limited by thermal load, so it has important theoretical significance and practical value to carry out the research on the thermal load capacity of submarine cables. Based on the marine meteorological data, this paper established a three-dimensional magnetic-thermo-flow multi-physical field coupled model of submarine cables by using COMSOL simulation software. The influence of ocean current flow velocity and flow direction on the thermal capacity of submarine cables under different laying modes based on marine meteorological data will be investigated.

Experimental/Modeling methods

Firstly, the multi-physical field coupled model of submarine cables was established. The harmonic average method was used to simplify the model, which significantly improved the simulation efficiency on the premise of ensuring accuracy. Secondly, the magnetic field and heat transfer field realize bidirectional coupling through the temperature-related conductivity of the cables core in the electromagnetic and thermal fields during the simulation of temperature distribution. Finally, the flow field is analyzed.

Results/discussion

In the same environment, the error of carrying capacity between the model considering the harmonic average method and that without considered is less than 5%. The simulation results show that when the cable is directly buried, the cable load is significantly affected by the flow velocity, and the change of the flow direction has little influence on the cable load. When the cable is without buried, the influence of flow velocity and flow direction on the cable load cannot be ignored.

Conclusions

The multi-physical field coupled model of submarine cables considering the harmonic average method is capable of the temperature field analysis of submarine cables with different laying modes under ocean current, which can provide a reference of the safe and reliable operation of submarine cables.
