The polar effects of pulse discharge in water widely exist, these polar effects include breakdown voltage, streamer propagation speed, streamer morphology, etc. The polar effects are not static, when the external conditions change, the polar effects will sometimes change. In this paper, the breakdown phenomenon of different polarities under millisecond pulses is studied in detail, and the phenomenon of polarity effect changes whoes mechanism is different from the short pulses is found. With the help of spectral detection and schlieren imaging techniques, the physicochemical reactions involved were analyzed, and the internal causes and transition mechanisms of such polar effects were expounded. Studies have shown that the distribution of space charges, the source of colliding electrons, and the magnetic shrinkage effect will cause positive and negative streamers to exhibit different spatial distribution and time evolution characteristics.
