Engineering education consists of assessment at multiple levels to evaluate the performance of students. Recent trends in India has shown lack of skills among graduating engineers even after securing good grades during the program. Imparting technical skills to engineering graduates is a crucial process and cannot be achieved through classroom mode of teaching alone. In this paper, self-evaluation during a project work in the team is studied as an important tool for students so that they find the areas of self-improvement. The project was selected by the project guide and it fulfilled two basic requirements necessary for modern-day engineers: (i) Development of project in pre-final year of Engineering undergraduate program (ii) Project must be eco-friendly. Title of the project is ‘Development of energy efficient lighting systems’. A survey was conducted among students of pre-final year student to evaluate upon their own learning by reflecting on experiences during the Project work. Based on the response of students, statistical analysis was done and it established that students were able to better understand the concepts when they are exposed to project work in the pre-final year of their course. Analysis has provided meaningful results to use self - evaluation as an assessment tool in an Outcome-based education system.
