The technology of detecting ultrasonic signal generated by partial discharge on electric power cables is still immature. It is very important to study the propagation characteristics of sound signal on cable in each frequency band for further research on the technology of detecting partial discharge of cable by ultrasonic signal. Due to the serious attenuation of ultrasonic signal on the cable, the sensitivity of using the existing ultrasonic sensor to detect the ultrasonic signal generated by partial discharge on the XLPE cables is very poor. Therefore, the propagation characteristics of sound signals within 1kHz in XLPE cables are studied by using the method of breaking the pencil core, which provides a reference and theoretical basis for further study of the propagation characteristics of higher frequency sound signals in cables.
