The Canadian Nuclear Society will once again be hosting a NWMD&ER conference from September 11-14, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Similar to previous NWMD&ER conferences, the emphasis will be on the sharing and exchange of information between specialists, government representatives and officials, industry, community, Aboriginal and Métis communities, and other stakeholders to foster collaborations for the benefit of Canadian and international nuclear industries as a whole.
The Canadian Nuclear Waste Management, Decommissioning and Environmental Restoration (NWMD&ER) Conferences held in 2005 and 2011 were highly successful, with over 300 international participants and received the support of several prominent organization of the nuclear community.
Government Policies, Programs & Oversight (Karine Glenn-CNSC, Doug Metcalfe-NRCan): Includes new developments and updates on federal, provincial and international programs and policies, and regulatory and oversight matters. Can include contracting, permitting, compliance, privatization, new regulation, and standards development.
Stakeholder Engagement (Ben Belfadhel-NWMO): Includes approaches for and experience in communication, public involvement, education and collaborative decision making. Objectives include enhancing public involvement, advancing ideas for knowledge sharing, and highlighting innovative approaches.

Uranium Mining & Milling Waste Management (Tom Kotzer-Cameco): Includes the regulatory interfaces, compliance verification and monitoring, and processing and disposal of waste (including waste rock, tailings and mill effluent, and site remediation).
Low Level, Intermediate Level & Mixed Waste Management (Steve Liblong-CNL, Tim Dalpee Bruce Power): Includes generation through treatment, recycling, long term management and disposal, technology deployment, and effluent monitoring for all types of facilities from hospitals, research, power generating, radiochemical, and waste facilities.
Waste Characterization, Processing, Packaging& Waste Minimization (Ruth Burany-Kinectrics, Chase Amyot-OPG): Includes waste characterization, waste processing, and packaging and minimization including strategies, technologies, and technical development.
Waste Transportation (Karine Glenn-CNSC, Chase Amyot-OPG): Includes transport package development and regulatory considerations, transportation logistics and operations, and integrated planning and scheduling issues for large shipping campaigns, stakeholder and public interactions.
Used Nuclear Fuel & High Level Waste (HLW) Management (Mike Garamszeghy-NWMO, Peter Ottensmeyer U of T): Includes treatment, recycling through interim storage, long term management and disposal. Also covers safety assessment, licensing, monitoring, siting, and development of a deep geological repository.
Environmental Remediation (Shafi Andseta-Terraprobe): Includes remedial actions, inspection, characterization, sampling, compliance, aquifer and soil remediation and management of residual waste, technological or process improvements, closure, and legacy management/long-term stewardship.
Decommissioning Strategies & Projects (Charles Hickman-NBP, Rina Vijay-OPG): Includes site wide decommissioning strategies and financial funding models to regulatory aspects and planning. Can include waste characterization, waste storage, waste handling, clearance criteria, decontamination, dismantling and demolition, and international technology.
Transition of AECL to CNL (Doug Metcalfe-NRCan, CRL, Paul McClelland AECL): Includes the impact on waste management, decommissioning and restoration operations of the restructuring of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL), from the formation of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to a Government Owned-Contractor Operated (GoCo) entity.
Other Potential Tracks (Shinya Nagasaki-McMaster, Pauline Watson): Developing the Next Generation of Nuclear Waste Leadership, Information Management, Education, Communication, Technical Innovation in Waste Management, and Safety & Safeguards. This track serves two independent functions, first for authors unsure of the best track number can assign their abstract here. Second it covers special topics including international items.
