The Gordon Research Conference on "Phosphorylation and G Protein Mediated Signaling Networks" was established in 1970 and fostered by Nobel Laureates Earl Sutherland, Edwin Krebs, Edmond Fischer and Al Gilman and many other leaders in the signal transduction field. While the conference title has expanded along with our knowledge of cell signaling ("Cyclic AMP", "Cyclic Nucleotides", "Second Messengers and Protein Phosphorylation"), the conference remains a premier venue for cutting-edge discoveries in diverse areas of signal transduction, with particular emphasis on protein kinase, phosphatase and heterotrimeric G protein-dependent networks that mediate the actions of cell-surface receptors. The 2016 conference will bring together leading innovators, global experts, and early stage investigators to facilitate the exchange of ideas, challenge dogma, develop collaborations, and accelerate the pace of research. Sessions will emphasize structural, spatial, and temporal dynamics of signaling and the contribution of these molecular mechanisms to disease. Particular focus will include the identification of druggable targets and new technology that can be applied to signaling networks in metabolic, inflammatory, and stress-related pathways in disease. Rewiring of these signaling pathways can lead to pathologies in a range of heritable and environmentally-driven diseases, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and depression. This meeting draws an enthusiastic and engaged group of students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty at all stages to create an exciting and collegial atmosphere that makes it the "go-to" event on the beautiful coast of Maine.
