In India, there were a large number of research groups in pure and applied optics. Following the global trend, research in topics has slowly drifted towards fiber optics and photonics over the years. The first international conference on fiber optics and photonics was held in our country at Bangalore in 1992. Since then the conference is being organized biennially in different parts of the country. Photonics 94, 96, 98, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012 were organized by IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur (jointly with Univ. of Calcutta and CGCRI), IIT Bombay, CUSAT, Univ. of Hyderabad, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Madras respectively. In all these events, there has been overwhelming response from all over the world leading to intimate interactions, exchange of ideas between scientists and technologists. The responsibility of organizing PHOTONICS 2014 has been taken up by IIT Kharagpur which would be held in its beautiful, greenish academic campus spread over ~1600 acres at Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is the first IIT, established in 1951, with a capacity of ~ 10,000 students, 19 departments, five schools and five centres. During the diamond jubilee year (2011-2012), IIT Kharagpur has witnessed several eminent personalities including four Nobel laureates. Several faculties in the departments of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Advanced Development Technology Centre, G.S. Sanyal School of Telecommunications, and Material Science Centre are actively involved in different areas of fiber optics and photonics. Photonics 2014 conference will be held from 13-16 December 2014, where tutorials will be held on 13 December, while technical conference will take place from 14-16 December 2014 in Vikramshila Complex at IIT Kharagpur. The main themes of this conference are (i) Fiber and Guided wave photonics, (ii) Lasers and nonlinear optics, (iii) Nanophotonics, plasmonics and metamaterials, (iv) Quantum optic, information and processing, (v) Optical communication and networks, (vi) Bio-photonics, (vii) Photonic Materials and Devices. All accepted papers will be published on OSA's opticsinfobase.org within two weeks of the conference. Kharagpur town is located about 140 kms away from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Calcutta and is about 115 kms by train. Calcutta, one of the metro cities of India is well connected nationally and internationally.
