活动简介

The conference is a celebration of the convenience of electricity and investigates new ways to “do more with the energy you use” – productive use of a strategic resource by an ever expanding base of consumers in both the residential and business sector means that South Africa can grow its economy thanks to a reliable electricity supply.
Enjoy Cape Town at the finest time of the year! At the same time, please join the local drive to conserve water – our other most precious resource.
Energy is life
Last year we celebrated a quarter-century of the Domestic Use of Energy Conference (DUE) that presents a platform to consider the challenges of domestic energy use.
Discussing the latest technologies, the most recent developments, global trends and industry-changing breakthroughs, DUE 2018 will contribute to improving the capacity of South African households to enjoy the convenience of electricity by using it wisely.
Reflecting our strategic objective – towards sustainable energy solutions for the developing world – this year’s conference focuses on assisting the electrification process in South Africa by extending the options to bring power to an estimated 1.5 million households in rural areas.
The benefits of an electrified home are self-evident: Families being able to wash and clean with hot water, children studying at night and parents being able to provide an evening meal without having to use polluting fuels to cook, are but three examples of the immensely positive socio-economic consequences of having access to electricity.  Worldwide over 4 million people die prematurely every year as a result of illnesses attributable to household air pollution from cooking on polluting stoves.
There are many ways in which electricity gives us more time for what is really important and eases our lives beyond the most basic of lifestyle necessities.Lighting, for instance, has become so efficient that we can use it in all manner of novel ways. The growing excitement about autonomous and electric vehicles is currently revolutionising the motor vehicle industry. More thermally efficient homes are being built, which makes climate control far more affordable.
With South Africa having entered a new era of surplus generation capacity, more electricity can be supplied to more households – and the long-term growth plans of more businesses energised – than at any time during the past decade.

Workshop on Electric Mobility

As the prices of batteries fall and their power density increases, so electric vehicles meeting commuter demands are becoming more affordable. Some forecast the death of the internal combustion engine within a few years. However, widespread use of electric-powered vehicles will enforce considerable growth in the power generation, transmission and distribution systems, and the abandonment of the huge infrastructure needed to produce and distribute liquid fuels.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • Fully electric vs hybrid vehicles
  • Charging rates vs the distribution of charging points
  • The ownership of charging systems – public vs private
  • The change in the emission of greenhouse gases
  • The economics of a shrinking liquid-fuels business
  • Job losses in vehicle maintenance
