The objective of this tutorial is to deliver a comprehensive overview of image-based 3D imaging technologies that are widely adopted to acquire high-quality 3D objects for creating virtual humans and objects for various applications of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). This tutorial will help the CASA audience understand the foundations of 3D imaging and also provide inclusive explanations of the state-of-the arts for achieving 3D geometry scanning with high accuracy.
This tutorial first provides the foundations of 3D imaging, including geometric model, calibration and triangulation of a camera and a projector. It will explain the general pipeline of 3D imaging from processing partial 3D geometries to building a complete 3D model. It will also provide comprehensive overviews of state-of-the-art 3D imaging approaches that can be widely practiced in VR/AR applications.

Geometric models in 3D imaging and calibrations of a camera and a projector. 50 minutes including questions.
3D scanning pipeline from piecewise geometries to a complete 3D model and relevant algorithms for 3D imaging. 50 minutes including questions.
Overviews of state-of-the-art techniques. It will cover tentatively as follows: structured light-based 3D scanning, phase-shift profilometry, photometric stereo, time-of-flight imaging, birefractive stereo imaging. 50 minutes including questions.
