组合科学学会SCS(Society of Combinatorial Sciences)是一为推进组合化学和相关组合科学(包括材料学、药学、有机化学、无机化学、催化剂、生物学、化学生物学)理论和实践基础的教育活动、研究对人类健康及财富起重要作用的化学作用而创立的国际性协会。 SCS-2009定于2009年9月19日至22日在北京九华山庄举办,以邀请演讲、演讲、壁报等模式围绕主题(强调组合科学研究)进行。已邀请4位相关领域国际最为知名的教授——加州大学旧金山分校的Jim Wells、加州大学伯克利分校的Jon Ellman、匹兹堡大学的Dennis Curran、康奈尔医学院的Carl Nathan做专题报告。 The Second International Symposium on Combinatorial Sciences in Biology, Chemistry, Catalysts and Materials, or SCS-09 will be held in Beijing on Sept. 19-23, 2009. The symposium will contain plenary lectures, invited lectures, and oral and poster presentations. This high impact conference also includes the following features: The Second Asian International Symposium on Combinatorial Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Microwave-Assisted Organic Synthesis (MAOS) Congress 2009 will be combined with this conference and immediately after the conference, Japan Combinatorial Chemistry Focus meeting will be held in Japan. This meeting is an unprecedented event for scientists from all over the world to discuss sciences, new applications, new technologies and the future of the field. We would like to extend our warmest invitation to you and your colleagues. Combinatorial science was derived from observation of the mechanism of many processes essential to life and life’s successful development. The observation was that most successful generation of new traits necessary for survival occurred through processes composed of 3 steps. i) Random generation of molecular diversity; ii) Survival of features through selective pressure; iii) Reiteration and refinement. During the last decade, this unique aspect of nature was adopted by scientists of all fields to promote a completely new revolutionary way of thinking and performing scientific research. The new combinatorial mindset recognized that the subtleties of nature do not allow us to easily design compounds (pharmaceuticals, materials or catalysts) with the perfect properties. Instead we can mimic nature and use building blocks, accessible through isolation and synthesis to construct large numbers of diverse structures with high probability for activity, then assay by a variety of screening and selection tools. Since the beginning of 21 century, the clinical candidate pipeline continues to struggle and the discovery of new drugs and other novel entities is still facing extremely high risk due to numerous challenges such as high attrition rate and limited resources. At the same time, we are facing new challenges of elucidating functions of genomes and proteomes with small molecule probes. During this decade, the sciences that established combinatorial chemistry are at the forefront of various discovery areas although they bear names such as “high-throughput medicinal chemistry”, “technology-enabled discovery”, or “automated discovery technologies”. At the same time, the practice of combinatorial chemistry has been spread worldwide.
