In recent years instrumentation and computing systems have been integrated to all aspects of modern life, from healthcare, to transportation and the infrastructure that supports the operation of urban areas. This proliferation has lead to an enormous increase in the number of sensor streams that need to be processed. Buildings are perhaps the application domain that best exemplifies this change. Just in the last 10 years, millions of smart meters have been deployed by utilities to monitor and control electric power delivery, hundreds of new products have come to the market to address comfort, efficiency and security in homes and commercial spaces, etc. Each one of these applications relies heavily on signal processing techniques to transform the raw signals into useful information. Yet, despite the opportunities and the number of researchers working in this area, there are very few venues dedicated to discussing academic progress in this space. This symposium seeks to fill that gap and provide a forum for researchers to exchange novel approaches and problems related to the application of signal processing in smart buildings. Our hope is that the Signal Processing community gets familiarized with the many opportunities in buildings, and that the buildings community can learn more about the technical solutions that the signal processing community can provide.
