Biosecurity is about the management of the risk of entry, establishment or spread of pests and diseases. Its responsibility encompasses not only the prediction, detection and control of incursions of pests and diseases, but also the management of consequences of established pests and diseases. Show high resolution image Big Data Analytics for Biosecurity (BioBAD 2015) Successful biosecurity risk management systems can help reduce the risk of exotic incursions and endemic outbreaks in a timely manner and improve the effectiveness of mitigation and eradication responses, thus contributing to social, environmental and economic wellbeing. To deliver such a system, a number of challenges have to be addressed. Among them is the need to deal with huge volumes of biosecurity data coming from different sources, and with different formats and semantics. Examples of such data include trade and transportation data, pest and disease data, environmental data and social media data. Also, efficient and effective approaches are needed for processing and analysing such huge data, and eventually communicating results to users so that they can make timely biosecurity decisions and implement new biosecurity strategies. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners across the fields of data and knowledge management, machine learning, ecology, biology and epidemiology to discuss issues, solutions and opportunities related to biosecurity data analytics.
