Solid state and materials chemistry has played a significant role in the design and discovery of new compounds and materials that have laid the foundation of new technologies, including sustainable energy generation. Many technologies are materials limited and the discovery of new materials with novel properties is a major area of research. The field of solid state and materials chemistry has grown significantly over the last two decades with successes in the preparation of new materials with unique electronic, optical, magnetic and catalytic properties. These materials provide the foundation, while structure-property correlations provide the framework for existing and emerging technologies. This conference will provide perspective from industry, national laboratories, and academics on these successes, on the impact and on new directions in research in solid state and materials chemistry. The impact of length scale of materials on physical properties is an example of one new direction. The latest advances and challenges in solid state and materials chemistry will be presented to promote the exchange of ideas at the frontiers of the field. Emphasis will be on the synthesis and design of materials for emerging technologies, functional solids for energy storage and conversion, and cutting edge characterization to enhance our understanding of the materials’ properties and to advance the field. Speakers and poster presenters are explicitly encouraged to emphasize advances, unpublished results, and new ideas on materials synthesis, structural analysis, and physical properties characterization. The organizers strongly encourage active contribution to discussions and participation in poster sessions, which offer an excellent opportunity for presenting and learning about new and exciting research.
