The WSEN Global Summit 2014 will be hosted by Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Students from around the world will come together to discuss the advancement of environmental sustainability in higher education. The summit will be the seventh annual gathering of the World Student Environmental Network (WSEN) and the first to be held in the developing world. (Previously the summit was known as the World Student Environmental Summit.)
From 30 June to 5 July 2014 the vibrant university town of Stellenbosch will play host to 80 student delegates from over 30 countries. In the context of global environmental challenges, delegates will discuss how they can advance sustainability in their universities and communities. Students will be informed and inspired by leading sustainability experts, develop project ideas and skills at a range of workshops and undertake excursions to experience the realities of a developing country. One of the summit’s main outcomes will be the WSEN 2014 Action Plan – a call to action that delegates will take back to their respective universities.
The summit’s theme “Coming Back To Life” emphasises the need for humanity to reconnect with nature, to see ourselves not as separate from, but as fundamentally part of the web of life. Confronted by complex global problems we are at a turning point – many of today’s decisions and actions will echo far into the future. How do our values determine our relationships with the environment? How may we progress from talk to more meaningful action? What actions can students take in their universities and communities? These are some of the key questions that will fall under the spotlight at the 2014 WSEN Global Summit.
