活动简介
New observational capabilities keep on transforming our understanding of the Universe from the cosmic background radiation to exoplanets. Given their incredible scientific and societal impact, it is all the more remarkable that the ideas driving these capabilities are almost always born in humble settings such a morning coffee break or a dinner with colleagues and that they are initially cast on white boards or even a restaurant napkin! Moreover, the path from these humble beginnings to the sky is often lost in the excitement of the first observations. This path is a critical mixture of science, technology, people and timing. Getting this mixture right is the key to a successful project, and looking at successful projects large and small can collectively teach us about the ‘art’ of getting it right. Mastering this art becomes even more critical as astronomy embarks on larger and larger projects with longer and longer timescales. The depth and breadth of the SPIE Astronomical Telescope and Instrumentation meeting sets the perfect stage for highlighting various paths to success that teams and collaborations have taken to achieve a broad range of spectacular goals. As leading experts present the latest scientific achievements, facility concepts, and technical advances in the world of astronomy, special attention will be paid to the behind-the-scene process that have led or are leading them from the drawing board to the sky. The format for the 2014 meeting in Montréal consists of two technology tracks and twelve conferences. The topics range from space telescopes and instrumentation to software and cyber infrastructure. Anyone interested in astronomical technology will find something fascinating in the focused conferences, industrial exhibits, and plenary talks.
