Worldwide, the electricity network has grown in size and complexity over the years. With the experience gained in the operation of the large grids, there is plan to link the major electricity network with neighbouring grids, forming large interconnected national and international grids. The progressive growth of economy of any nation is possible only through efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. There is a growing need to strengthen the electricity network, meet the increasing demand, enable competition in the electricity market and integrate more sustainable generation resources. This also provides a great opportunity for the utilities to set in place a modern intelligent grid to ensure greater reliability and efficiency across the entire network. Given that several components of such a Smart Gird are still in a demonstration phase, it is required to bring together different stakeholders to one forum to discuss the challenges ahead and to come out with action plans to have these smart power delivery systems. In this context, to realize the vision and reap the full benefits of a more intelligent energy system, the four-day conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Asia - 2013 is being organized by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) and the IEEE PES-Bangalore Chapter.
