One of the most ancient example of this constructive system is found in Minoic culture (Knossos and Phestos) then, with empiric attitude, the builders discover the advantages of the use of timber frame in seismic regions. Hence several and various types of timber framed developed in different European countries. Timber framing with infill masonry has appeared in Turkey (so-called Himis) and a similar constructive technique, the Gaiola, originated after the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. In south Italy, Ferdinando IVth the Bourbon, with full anti-seismic awareness, obliged technicians to use masonry reinforced with timber frame in the Calabria reconstruction after the 1783 destructive seism. The buildings with timber framing load bearing structure faced several earthquakes, (i.e. South Calabria, Italy, 1905 and 1908; Kocaeli and Duzce, Turkey, 1999; Lefkas, Greece, 2003) with negligible or absent damages, proofing an high resistance to dynamic actions. In fact, the reduced mass of the building and a certain ductility given by the friction between the masonry and the timber members assure to this type of construction an appropriateness in seismic areas. It represents a real prototype for the anti-seismic modern framed system and it is undoubted a component of Historic Architectural Heritage, bearer of immense values such as creativity and inventiveness. Therefore the Symposium wants to be a contribute to the knowledge of historic masonry reinforced timber framing, a fundamental requisite to encourage the conservation of this important and precious document of the history of European technology. The meeting will provide a forum for engineers and architects, researchers and educators in the field of Technology History, Constructive features and Earthquake behavior of timber structures.
