The 2013 GRC on Oxidative Stress and Disease, "The Metabolic Inflammatory Axis in Brain Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease", focuses on bioenergetic deficits, activation of inflammatory responses, and white matter metabolism in brain aging and Alzheimer’s. Dynamic interactions among these systems will be examined in terms of their causative or in-tandem occurrence and whether they occur in micro-environments that ultimately lead to global changes in brain. The themes of the conference are integrated in 9 sessions that include (a) Neurovascular and neurometabolic pathways in brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease; (b) Mitochondrial metabolism in brain aging and neurodegeneration; (c) functional metabolic parameters of brain aging and cognition; (d) Neuroinflammation, microglia aging, and Alzheimer’s disease; (f) Insulin resistance, diabetes, and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease; (g) Systemic environment in brain aging and Alzheimer’s, and (h) Age-related cognitive deficits. Two other sessions include a keynote presentation and oral presentations from young investigators from selected poster.
The Conference will bring together a distinguished cadre of investigators who are at the forefront of their field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. Some poster presenters will be selected for short talks. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with programmed discussion sessions as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented.
