活动简介
The transport of mucus and other fluids by motile cilia is fundamental to human health and development. Disruption of this process in the respiratory tract due to ciliary dysfunction (as a result of primary ciliary dyskinesia) or alterations in the viscoelastic properties of mucus leads to severe pulmonary diseases such as cystic fibrosis and bronchitis. Similarly, alterations in cilia-driven fluid flow and disruption of extracellular signaling gradients during embryogenesis can result in a broad array of devastating developmental disorders (ciliopathies). This conference provides the unique opportunity for basic scientists and clinical researchers interested in these inter-related areas to discuss their latest findings and learn about new technologies that provide novel approaches to current challenges. This conference attracts a broad array of scientists ranging from biophysicists and biochemists to physiologists and geneticists. In addition, the conference format provides excellent opportunities for junior scientists to present their work and exchange ideas in a collegial atmosphere with leaders in the field. The meeting will begin on the Sunday evening with two keynote lectures by eminent scientists from the fields of cilia and mucus who will set out the current paradigms within these areas and provide insight into the key challenges for the future. This will be followed by eight sessions that will include a combination of invited presentations and short talks on the latest results selected from the abstracts received. Each session will be chaired by two discussion leaders who will provide brief overviews of the topics to be covered. These formal sessions will also include significant time for discussion. Furthermore, there will be additional opportunities for informal discussions during the afternoons and evenings. In addition, there will be two poster sessions which will allow for the in-depth presentation of new results. Sessions to be included in the 2013 conference include: Ciliary Assembly and Mucus Production Biophysics of Cilia/Mucus Interactions Differentiation of Multiciliated and Secretory Cells Cilia, Flow and Tissue Development Genomic/Proteomic/Glycomic Approaches to Ciliopathies and Muco-ciliary Disease Cilia/Fluid Interactions New Approaches to the Study of Cilia and Muco-ciliary Interactions Model Systems in Understanding Ciliary Function and Muco-ciliary Disease
