Vacuum circuit breakers are being applied in the power transmission in recent years. The power transmission system has a higher dv/dt on the rise of recovery voltage than the distribution system at the current interruption. In this research, a synthetic interrupting test was performed with a vacuum interrupter to investigate its ability to withstand high dv/dt. The test was conducted with a maximum interrupting current of 40 kA and a recovery voltage of 55 kV peak with a rise dv/dt of approximately 11 kV/µs. For the same dv/dt conditions, the higher interrupting currents often resulted in interrupting failure. In addition, the post-arc current peak exceeded 30 A at the interruption failure. The interruption performance did not degrade when the recovery voltage dv/dt was increased from 10 to 15 kV/µs
