Recently, how to improve the insulation performance of the electrode vacuum gap of high voltage level vacuum switches has become an important issue in the application of vacuum circuit breakers to high voltage levels. The objective of this paper is to study the influence of the external transverse magnetic field on the breakdown of vacuum gap between rod-plate electrodes. Firstly, the electric field distribution of the rod plate electrode in the glass shell vacuum interrupter and the stable magnetic field distribution generated by the permanent magnet were simulated and studied. Then, the effect of applying a transverse magnetic field on the true space gap field emission current of the rod plate electrode was experimentally studied. The experiment was conducted under a series of small electrode gaps, and the field emission current measured under the same voltage at different gaps was used for horizontal comparison to analyze the effect of the transverse magnetic field under different gaps. At different electrode distances, the voltage is accumulated in 10kV units from zero until breakdown occurs between the electrodes.
