Damping can produce energy dissipation, which plays a positive role in vibration suppression. The phenomenon that a kind of material has the ability to improve the energy dissipation compared to other materials with the same damping composition and equivalent static characteristics is called hyper-damping phenomenon. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear elastic metamaterial with local resonators which has collision effect and damping layer. Through the simulation, we found that the stronger collision in local resonators can make the damping layer has stronger ability about energy dissipation. Meanwhile, the vibration response of the elastic metamaterial become lower with collision stronger. Then we prepare a nonlinear metamaterial beam with collision. The rubber ring is introduced to provide damping. Then we test the vibration response of the metamaterial beam. The low-frequency, broadband and efficient vibration reduction effect can be seen by comparing the experimental results. This paper provides a new idea for the design of nonlinear elastic metamaterials with high effect vibration suppression.
