The conference is an evolution of the Advanced Metals Initiative (AMI) series of conferences which offered a platform for researchers and students from the AMI networks, Light Metals Development Network (LMDN), Ferrous Metals Development Network (FMDN), Precious Metals Development Network (PMDN) and Nuclear Materials Development Network (NMDN) and researchers globally, to present their work on topics related to the themes of the conference. The AMI conferences were annual conferences rotating between the different networks and the conference theme was based on the network hosting the conference. The annual AMI conference will in future not be limited to the theme of a specific network.
Researchers and students across all networks will have the opportunity to present their research on advanced materials. The AMI will no longer only represent R&D towards advanced metals, hence the name change to Advanced Materials Initiative. The programme will therefore encompass materials science aimed at beneficiation of South African Minerals towards R&D-led industrialisation.
