Selection Of Non-metallic Materials For Lined Pipes In Oilfield

Carbon steel pipelines have been applied in the oil & gas industry for decades and carbon steel is used for more than 90% of all new pipeline installations today. Carbon steel as pipeline material is due to wonderful combination of low material cost and excellent material properties in non corrosive environments. However, the service life is limited of carbon steel in corrosive environments, especially for H2S corrosion. The main advantage of non-metallic pipe systems is their corrosion resistance. Non-metallic materials lined carbon steel pipes become increasingly popular in transportation of crude oil, natural gas or water with high H2S in oilfield. The non-metallic materials like FRP, thermoplastic( PE and PVC) show superiority when lined in carbon steel for resisting H2S corrosion. It is necessary to discover the proper non-metallic materials which show strong ability to H2S environment. The work had done a series tests of variety non-metallic materials and provides constructive suggestions for oilfields and the suppliers on selection proper materials of lined pipes. Finally, some suggestions are given for future application of non-metallic materials lined pipes in Oilfield.
