This study aims at finding out a beneficial way to facilitate English writing by setting experiments on imitative writing for low-proficient non-English major students in tertiary Chinese EFL classrooms. Two natural classes (majors of physics and art, and ideology&literature)were selected. The research consists of four parts. Part One is an experimental study. Part two is a questionnaire study. Part Three is an interview. Part Four is a further experimental study. The results of comparing traditional writing and imitative writing reflects that imitative writing benefits students of low-proficiency with their writing scores increased rather than high-proficient students. High-proficient students have laid better foundation of language with enough input so that it is not necessary to have imitative writing. The questionnaire and the interview, the more proficient students reported that imitative writing inhibit their thinking and free writing, in contrast, the low-proficient students think imitative writing is a good practice. Through imitative writing, the latter group tries to understand the structure, the idea, the expressions, which decreases their anxiety of writing when they are asked to have the quizzes of writing.
