e-Mobility is concerned with the improved tractive performance and reduced emission bythe utilization of green/cleanenergy and is being ensured through the concept of more-electric/pure electric transportation. Under this concept efficiency of energy conversion and tractive performance are achieved through traction drives using electric motors and on-board energy sources such as batteries, fuel cell, solar panels, and power sources such as ultra-capacitors and flywheels.
In addition, all the on-board possible means of energy harvesting are also being explored. Issues concerned with the traction drives are: i) the selection of most appropriate traction motor for segments of light, mid andheavy duty vehicles, whichcould be an induction motor or a permanent or non-permanent type synchronous motors, such as permanent magnet brushless motors, synchronous reluctance motors, switched reluctance motors etc.; ii) effective utilization of torque speed characteristics ensuring the maximum torque per ampere with acceptable higher power and torque density;and ii) efficient on-board energy management to ensure extended autonomy of the vehicle concerned.
