Most urban rail vehicles are now usingregenerative braking during normal service. Meanwhile, the regeneration may fail due to the limitedline receptivityand thus with reducedenergy efficiency. In recent years, wayside regenerative inverters,on-board and/or wayside energy storage devices were discussed and implemented inurban rail transportation systems. Energy storage devices that can be used to absorb the regenerative energy include lithium batteries, supercapacitorsand flywheels, etc. Different energy storage devices have their quite different dynamics. In order to make full use of these energy storage devices, it is important to carry out comprehensive research in many aspects such as sizing, location of installation, energy management strategy. Themain objective of this special session is to share new developments in regenerative braking energy storage and utilization technology in urban rail transportation.
