Difficult to machine materials have contributed significantly to different aspects of sectors like defence, aerospace, space, automotive, nuclear etc. The focus is on developing materials which can withstand high temperature, have high strength and weight ratio, high corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties like fatigue strength, hardness, toughness etc. But these materials have certain characteristics like poor thermal conductivity, high strength at elevated temperatures and resistance to wear. Thus these materials create lot of problems during machining and include friction, heat generation at the cutting zone, high cutting tool wear, high cutting forces and vibrations and poor surface finish. The different difficult to machine materials include metals and nonmetals and include Titanium based alloys, Nickel base alloys, different types of composites, refractory metals, hardened steels, shape-memory alloys. There has been an increased interest in machining of these types of materials. There has been considerable development in cutting tool materials for machining these kinds of materials and include PCD, PCBN, carbides, ceramics, cermets etc. Newer methods are being developed to support effective machining of these kinds of materials and include thermally assisted machining, vibration assisted machining and use of cryogenic cooling etc. In this context, there is a need to understand the issues in machining these kinds of materials, aware of the recent developments and find meaningful solutions to these problems. In this context this conference is being organized, which can provide a platform for researchers, academicians, practitioners and industry professionals to meet on a common platform and deliberate on these issues to put things in perspective to be of use to sectors which use these kinds of materials.
