活动简介

Software is developed and used in a wide variety of scientific domains including nuclear physics, computational chemistry, satellite data processing, fluid dynamics, climate modeling, bioinformatics, vehicle development, population modeling and social simulation, sensor networks, drug discovery, and digital humanities. The increase in the importance of this software motivates the need to identify and understand appropriate software engineering (SE) practices for its development. Because of the variety and complexity of the scientific domains addressed software, existing SE tools and techniques developed for the business/IT community are often not efficient or effective. Appropriate SE solutions must account for the salient characteristics of the research-oriented development environment. This situation creates a need for members of the SE community to interact with members of the scientific software community to address this need. This workshop facilitates that collaboration by bringing together members of the SE, and scientific software communities to share perspectives and present findings relevant to research, practice, and education. A significant portion of the workshop is devoted to focused interaction among the participants with the goal of generating a research agenda to improve tools, techniques, and experimental methods regarding SE for science.

征稿信息

Additionally, practical experience reports are welcome and encouraged, including negative and neutral experiences. We will also accept shorter research papers (4 pages) that describe early research and position papers (1-2 pages) that do not fit the format expected of a full or short paper, but enable the participation of practitioners whose work concerns the understanding of the application of SE to scientific software.

Accepted papers will appear in the ICSE Companion Proceedings in the IEEExplore Digial Library. Selected papers will also be invited to submit to the Software Engineering track of Computing in Science & Engineering.

征稿范围

We encourage submissions from members of the SE and scientific software communities addressing issues including but not limited to:

  • Case studies of software development processes used in scientific applications;
  • Design patterns and software architectures for scientific software;
  • Software engineering metrics and tool support for scientific applications;
  • Issues in publishing or reusing scientific research software and data;
  • The use of empirical studies to better understand the environment, tools, languages, and processes used in research application development and how they might be improved;
  • V&V techniques specifically targeted for the scientific domain;
  • SE education for scientific developers.
