Microalgae Chlorella sp. used for nutrients recovery from anaerobic effluent and biocrude production: influence of reaction temperature on hydrothermal liquefaction

Anaerobic digestion (AD) liquid digestate may result in environmental eutrophication if not properly treated or used. Microalgae can not only recover nutrients from AD effluent wastewater, but also be harvested as wet biomass for the production of biocrude oil via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). We investigated the effect of temperature on the production of biocrude oil from Chlorella sp. cultivated in AD effluent of chicken manure. The highest oil yield (30.35%, daf) was achieved at 330oC, 60 min and 15% TS. Elemental analysis shows that the hydrogen content in the biocrude oil at 300oC was nearly 10% by dry weight, whereas the nitrogen content decreased by 39.4%-47.4% with the lowest at 290oC. GC-MS revealed that the biocrude oil consisted of various chemical compounds, such as hydrocarbons, acids, alcohols, ketones, phenols and aldehydes. Specifically, the biocrude oil contained 18.1% wt. hydrocarbons at 300oC. TGA results showed that the mass fraction of biocrude oil at 125oC-365oC was 60.64%. This study demonstrates the great potential for biocrude oil production from microalgae grown in AD effluent via HTL.
