The start-up step of A2/O biological filter bed device was studied by gradually increasing the water salinity after the pre-biofilm formation, as well as the salinity adaptability of the device. The results showed that the biological filter bed system was successfully established after around 50 days with the concentrations of CODcr, suspended solid and ammonia stabilized at 82.7, 35.4 and 13.5 mg.L-1, respectively, which accords with the 1st grade of national effluent standard. Furthermore, with a high salinity of 5%, the water quality, including CODcr, suspended solid and ammonia, after treatment stills meets the 2nd grade of national effluent standard, which indicates a satisfactory and reliable salinity adaptability of the device design.
