Due to the high cost-effective and excellent magnetic performance, NdFeB materials are widely used in electrical and electronic products. China is the largest consumer and major producer of rare earth materials (REMs), and the market share of NdFeB accounts for more than 30% of the whole REMs industry. The waste NdFeB has high value and is easy to recover and recycle, as is estimated that, the volume of the NdFeB wastes in China could reach more than 40,000 tons in 2012, which is worth more than 10 billion RMB. However, due to the lack of the standard-system of recovery and recycling (R&R), only a few materials have been recycled, resulting in serious resource depletion and environmental pollution. This work has three main contributions that help in the choice of the most appropriate R&R standard-system for the NdFeB materials. Firstly, the material flow of the rare earth metals in the NdFeB materials are analyzed, discovering that a complete standard-system should contain the base standards, standards on participants responsibility, on recovery, on processing, on secondary-products and on analysis. Secondary, the development status of China’s R&R standard-system of waste NdFeB materials is analyzed, discovering that the primarily defects are the standards on the participants responsibility, reproduction processing and secondary-products. Finally, the development direction of the R&R standard-system is determined to support the relevant policy in China.
