摘要
The safe and efficient capture of radioactive iodine (¹²⁹I/¹³¹I) released from nuclear facilities and reactor off-gas treatment remains a critical challenge in nuclear waste management. To enhance the safety of the nuclear industry, it is of utmost importance to effectively capture radioactive species before its release to the environment. Adsorption-based method has witnessed recent advancements in the development and utilization of different porous materials to enhance the capture of radioactive iodine products. Traditional sorbents, such as silver-exchanged zeolites, often suffer from limited pore volumes, low kinetic efficiency, and high material costs. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising sorbents for volatile iodine due to their tunable pore architectures, high surface areas, and chemically accessible metal sites. In this study, iron (Fe) and silver (Ag) based MOFs were evaluated for the capture and removal of iodine. Ag-doped frameworks were designed to exploit the strong, chemisorptive affinity of Ag(I) for I₂, while Fe-based nodes were incorporated to provide open metal sites. Static batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that the monometallic MOFs achieved high capture efficiency, exceeding 97%. Kinetic modeling and adsorption studies further elucidated the underlying mechanisms governing iodine uptake on the active framework sites. The current findings motivate further breakthrough curve studies to optimize bimetallic MOF design for practical nuclear waste iodine capture applications.
