摘要
Marine scientists are rarely trained to communicate. We are trained to measure, model, and publish. Yet the communities most vulnerable to ocean change coastal fishing families, small-scale bivalve harvesters, and local government officers in places like Tanzania urgently need to understand what our science means for their livelihoods. This talk shares honest lessons from more than a decade of trying to bridge that gap.
Our research on compound ocean stressors including marine heatwaves, ocean acidification, and food limitation shows that bivalve populations along Tanzania's coast face serious and accelerating risks. Communicating these findings, however, proved far more difficult than conducting the underlying science. Early outreach efforts using academic-style presentations, English-language materials, and expert-led formats failed to engage local audiences. Community members were polite but distant. The message did not land.
Rebuilding our approach around listening rather than lecturing produced measurable change. Swahili-language storytelling, participatory mapping of fish and shellfish decline, and collaboration with local leaders and fisherwomen transformed passive audiences into active partners. We also describe the additional challenges of working across the Tanzania–China scientific corridor, where differing publication incentives, institutional cultures, and definitions of “impact” can quietly undermine community-centered communication goals.
Through local government engagement, we continue to test and refine these strategies finding that trust, consistency, and cultural humility matter far more than polished slides or high-impact journal rankings.
Our core lesson: effective ocean science communication does not begin when you open your mouth. It begins when you close it and learn from the people whose ocean you study.
