From Research to Action: Communicating Evidence on Heavy Metal Pollution in Mombasa's Coastal Waters to Inform Public Awareness and Environmental Decision-Making

Heavy metal contamination in coastal ecosystems is a growing environmental and public health concern, yet scientific findings often remain inaccessible to the communities and decision-makers who can act upon  them.   Effective  science  communication  is  therefore  essential  for  translating  research  into environmental awareness, policy development, and sustainable coastal management.
This  presentation  draws  on  findings  from   our   recently  accepted  systematic  review,  Heavy  Metal Contamination in Mombasa's Coastal Waters and Sediments: A Systematic Review of Sources, Distribution, Ecological Risks, and Management Implications (2015–2024), as a case study for communicating marine pollution science to diverse audiences. The review synthesized evidence on the occurrence, distribution, sources, ecological risks, and management implications of heavy metals—including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn)—in Mombasa's coastal environment. Pollution hotspots such  as Tudor Creek,  Port  Reitz,  Makupa  Creek,  and  Kilindini  Harbour  highlight  the  urgent  need  for effective knowledge transfer beyond the scientific community.
The presentation explores strategies for translating technical evidence into accessible communication products, including policy briefs, research summaries, conference presentations, educational materials, stakeholder dialogues, and community outreach activities.  It also  reflects on challenges  encountered when  communicating  complex  environmental   risks,   including  varying  levels  of  scientific   literacy, uncertainty in environmental data, and the need to engage multiple stakeholders with differing priorities.
This  case  demonstrates  that   science  communication  is  not  an  end-stage  activity  but  an  integral component of environmental research.  By making scientific evidence  understandable and actionable, researchers can strengthen public awareness, support evidence-informed policy, encourage community participation,  and  contribute  to  the   sustainable  management  of  coastal  ecosystems.  The   lessons presented are applicable to marine pollution research and broader ocean sustainability initiatives under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
