Microbial organisms represent one of the most diverse and ecologically important components of aquatic ecosystems, yet their importance is often overlooked by the general public. Planktonic microorganisms, including ciliates and other microeukaryotes, play crucial roles in aquatic food webs, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem functioning. However, communicating their ecological significance remains challenging because of their microscopic nature and limited visibility.
This contribution highlights approaches for communicating microbial biodiversity and aquatic ecology with different audiences by transforming complex scientific knowledge into understandable and engaging messages. Based on research experiences in ciliate taxonomy, diversity, and ecological interactions, this presentation discusses the use of microscopy, visual communication, scientific storytelling, and interdisciplinary approaches to promote public understanding of aquatic ecosystems.
By revealing the hidden microbial world through images and ecological narratives, scientists can create stronger connections between research and society. Effective science communication can enhance awareness of aquatic biodiversity conservation and demonstrate how microscopic organisms contribute to the health and sustainability of marine and freshwater environments.
Sharing the invisible world of microorganisms provides an opportunity to inspire curiosity, encourage environmental responsibility, and strengthen connections between scientists, communities, and decision-makers for better protection of aquatic ecosystems.
