Marine science is often judged by the quality of its research, yet its lasting impact depends on how effectively that science is communicated. This presentation takes the audience on a journey across continents and disciplines, exploring how science communication can influence public awareness, behaviour and ultimately policy.
From Antarctica, where solar-powered lighting became an unexpected tool for communicating climate science and environmental stewardship, we travel north through the Middle East to examine how storytelling, education and film have supported marine conservation. The presentation includes the production of an award-winning National Geographic documentary, demonstrating how visual storytelling can translate complex marine science into compelling narratives that inspire stewardship of the world's oceans.
The journey continues through examples of communicating ecosystem-based fisheries management to governments, industry and fishing communities; supporting evidence-based policy responses to marine plastic pollution; and using iconic marine species such as sea turtles and whale sharks as flagship ambassadors to connect people emotionally with broader ecosystem conservation. These species provide powerful entry points for explaining ecosystem connectivity and the cumulative pressures of climate change, coastal development, pollution and unsustainable resource use.
The presentation also explores communicating science across different cultures, audiences and governance systems—from classroom education and community outreach to engaging policymakers responsible for shaping marine legislation and conservation strategies. Throughout, the emphasis is on translating robust scientific evidence into narratives that resonate with diverse audiences without compromising scientific integrity.
Importantly, the presentation reflects not only on successes but also on challenges. From communicating uncertainty to balancing scientific rigour with engaging storytelling, practical lessons are shared on building trust, adapting messages for different audiences and creating genuine dialogue rather than one-way dissemination of information. The presentation highlights the value of collaboration between scientists, educators, communicators, policymakers and filmmakers in extending the reach and influence of marine science.
Ultimately, these case studies demonstrate that effective science communication extends beyond raising awareness. It empowers individuals to make informed choices in their everyday lives, encourages communities to become active stewards of the marine environment, and provides decision-makers with accessible, evidence-based information that supports resilient and sustainable ocean policy. The lessons are broadly transferable to scientists and practitioners seeking to improve public engagement during the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and beyond.
