Deep-sea science—such as ocean drilling, paleoceanography, and deep-submergence exploration rely heavily on specialized data—including sediment cores, isotope records, and geodynamic models—which can easily feel distant to the general public. In an era where science and culture are increasingly intertwined, scientists, educators, and designers share a common challenge: how to translate complex Earth system science into a story that truly connects with people on an emotional and aesthetic level.
Based on the hands-on experiences of the Deep-Sea Science Outreach Center at Tongji University, we focuses on "Transmedia Storytelling and Visual Presentation in Deep-Sea Science." Our recent practices demonstrate that integrating popular culture, publishing web fiction, and hosting live ship-to-shore broadcasts can effectively bridge the gap to younger audiences and classrooms. However, cross-field communication also brings hidden difficulties—over-entertainment can dilute scientific rigor, and digital installations can easily become flashy gimmicks without real substance.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution, we present three simple, practical tools derived from our daily operations: an exhibit translation template, a ship-to-shore broadcast guide, and a toolkit for multi-format outreach products. We hope these modest resources and honest reflections can serve as useful references for colleagues in the international ocean science, design, and education community.
