摘要
Noctiluca scintillan is a prominent global bloom-forming dinoflagellate whose  red tides severely impact marine ecosystems. its life cycle is conventionally characterized by vegetative asexual fission interspersed with episodic sexual gametogenesis. where flagellated gametes have historically been dismissed as transient, non-feeding reproductive vehicles. Here, using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), we document the persistent, year-round presence of N. scintillans gamete-like cells across the East China Sea, including a stable, autonomous population within the oligotrophic Kuroshio Current where vegetative cells are entirely absent. To elucidate the mechanisms sustaining these cells, we performed targeted laboratory grazing and light-restriction experiments using induced gamete cultures. Our results definitively demonstrate that these flagellated cells lack photosynthetic capability but are autonomous heterotrophs capable of selective grazing and rapid asexual proliferation when restricted to bacterial prey (<2 μm), exhibiting a profound numerical response to Vibrio parahaemolyticus. These findings firmly establish that the N. scintillans flagellated stage constitutes a self-sustaining alternative generation—which we propose as the "Dinotype" phase—rather than a mere reproductive byproduct. This alternation of generations represents an evolutionary survival strategy; upon post-bloom prey depletion, vegetative cells undergo rapid gametogenesis, shifting into a distinct picoplanktonic trophic niche. By decoupling gamete survival from immediate sexual fusion, this persistent alternative generation functions as a perennial oceanic seed bank, facilitating long-distance dispersal via boundary currents and providing a missing mechanistic link that explains both the explosive onset of red tides and the global gene flow of this monotypic species.
