Spatiotemporal distribution of dissolved oxygen revealed by high-resolution data in the South China Sea basin

摘要
Oxygen dissolved (DO) in seawater is an indispensable substance for marine life, which is also widely used as a tracer for marine water mass transport and processes in the ocean. Integrating the DO data collected with in situ sensor and discrete bottle measurements, a high resolution (vertically 1 m) DO dataset was developed in South China Sea at the basin scale from 2014 to 2024. Spatially, in the water < 300 m, DO decreased southward from 18oN to 10oN, and the high-DO water was thicker in the northern basin than the southern basin. DO in the western SCS was higher than the eastern SCS at the same depths. In the water > 1000 m, DO was much higher in the northern basin than in the southern basin. Temporally, from 2014 to 2024, DO in 2024 was slightly lower than in 2014 in the upper water of <100 m, but there were no difference in the water >1000 m. Depth of DO maximum depth was deeper after 2020 compared to 2014. The vertical DO microstructure in the upper ocean will also be presented.
