摘要
The biological carbon pump (BCP) modulates climate through carbon fixation by phytoplankton in the surface ocean and subsequent downward transport to the deep ocean for long-term sequestration. The strength and efficiency of the BCP are strongly controlled by ecosystem structure. While global models represent different ecosystem structures by simulating multiple phytoplankton functional groups and their shifting dominance, they typically rely on spatially uniform biological parameters. This approach may underestimate the spatial heterogeneity in ecosystem structure and hence BCP. To address this issue, this study will develop two one-dimensional vertical biogeochemical models for the subpolar and subtropical gyres in the North Pacific, respectively. Two calibration schemes are implemented: one using a uniform parameter set optimized jointly for both gyres, and the other using two specific parameter sets individually tuned for each gyre. Results will be compared to evaluate the impact of spatial variability in biological parameters on the modeling of the BCP.
