摘要
Human activities are leading to increases in carbon dioxide, which is contributing to global climate change. These global changes are negatively impacting marine ecosystems at an unprecedented rate, including ocean warming and heatwaves, deoxygenation, acidification, and outbreak of pathogenic diseases. Abalone is a group of economically important marine gastropods and inhabits the intertidal and shallow subtidal areas that are some of the most impacted habitats in the world. Due to the increasingly severe global climate change, many species of abalone that are particularly sensitive to climate change have restricted population size and genetic diversity. Abalone like corals will need forward thinking management actions to survive and thrive in the future ocean. It will be critical to build resilience for abalone both in the wild and in aquaculture production that are facing a myriad of climate driven threats. Already researchers, fishers, and aquaculture specialists are developing strategies to help support abalone in a warming world using strategies such as mass relocation, assisted gene flow, and advanced multi-omics (e.g., metabolomics, transcriptomics) to assess stress.
