ArtScience Collaborations in School: Creating Connection to the Coral Ecosystem

摘要
The students at MBS Honors Academy study in a costal campus and take weekly sailing training, but are oblivious of the existence of the coral community just a mile from their campus (Dameisha, Shenzhen). To bridge this cognitive gap, we developed a transdisciplinary, 4-week ArtScience curriculum that translated marine science into tactile artistic practice, guiding 7th-grade students (aged 12–13) toward becoming mindful ecological stewards.
Our pedagogical arc guided students through Cognition, Emotion, Connection, and Action. The methodology integrated biology with intensive creative production. Over eight days, students crafted detailed plaster coral models, developing an intimate connection to the reef ecosystem. This artistic immersion set the stage for a critical pedagogical disruption: the deliberate shattering of a painted model to physically simulate the devastation of climate-driven bleaching and habitat destruction.
This visceral experience catalyzed a profound perceptual shift. Rebuilding the broken fragments into complex dioramas using recycled materials transformed ecological threats into a deeply personal reality. This process successfully sparked nascent agency. Students began noticing and exploring threats to the local corals and conservation strategies, transitioning from overlooking the sea to actively questioning how their community might protect it.
This case study shows ArtScience enriches STEM by centering students as creators, fostering direct dialogue with the ocean. As a replicable framework for marine education, this project proves that when youth create, they connect, and through connection, they care.
