摘要
This presentation introduces the central vision of a book currently in development that explores how scientific knowledge can guide humanity towards a regenerative relationship with nature. Rather than viewing sustainability as merely reducing environmental harm, the book argues that we must learn to live within the principles that have sustained life on Earth for billions of years. By integrating insights from oceanography, ecology, Earth system science, and environmental ethics, it demonstrates how nature-based solutions can support biodiversity, climate resilience, and human well-being while remaining grounded in rigorous science.

For centuries, humanity has measured progress through its ability to extract from nature. Oceans have been viewed as fisheries, shipping routes, mineral reserves, and more recently as tools for climate mitigation. This worldview has delivered remarkable technological advances but has also driven climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and ecosystem degradation. These crises reflect a deeper disconnect between human society and the natural systems upon which it depends.

Science has never provided us with a greater understanding of how nature functions. We now know that resilient ecosystems depend on biodiversity, interconnected species, and balanced physical, chemical, and biological processes. Research has revealed not only how ecosystems are degraded but also the conditions that allow them to recover.

The book builds upon a simple proposition: scientific knowledge should not only minimize environmental damage but fundamentally redefine humanity's relationship with nature. Instead of asking how much more we can take from ecosystems, we should ask what ecosystems need to remain healthy and how human societies can become active participants in natural processes rather than external managers of them.

This perspective moves beyond conservation alone. Protection remains essential, but restoration and regeneration must become equally important goals. Scientific advances increasingly demonstrate how restoring kelp forests, oyster reefs, mangroves, seagrasses, and coastal wetlands can simultaneously enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, support food production, strengthen coastal resilience, and contribute to climate mitigation. Emerging marine carbon dioxide removal approaches further illustrate both the opportunities and responsibilities of working with natural processes, highlighting the need for scientifically informed ecological guardrails.

Throughout the book, the ocean serves as both inspiration and teacher. As the planet's largest living system, it regulates climate, supports immense biodiversity, and sustains billions of people, while also revealing the consequences of unsustainable human activities. At the same time, marine ecosystems demonstrate remarkable resilience when ecological relationships are restored.

Ultimately, this project is not about saving nature but about rediscovering humanity's place within it. It argues that the defining challenge of the twenty-first century is ecological integration: aligning human aspirations with the natural principles that sustain life. Science provides the foundation, while design, culture, ethics, policy, education, and community action translate that knowledge into practice, offering a pathway from extraction to regeneration where human prosperity is measured by the resilience and abundance of the living world that sustains us all. The presentation invites an interdisciplinary dialogue on how scientific evidence can inspire transformative action and shape a future in which human development and ecological regeneration advance together.
