Marine science is the profession the I chose while art is the passion that refused to go away. Far from a weakness or distraction, my drawing skills have turned to be instrumental for my work, from helping me to understand the best ways to visualise information, to animating full videos that aid in the communication of research findings. In this presentation, I will show how art has accompanied me throughout my career and helped to explain complex scientific topics in an engaging and easy-to-digest way, both in the academic sphere and in public talks for a general audience. In addition, I will show two short animated videos that illustrate cutting edge research projects related to the conservation and survival of marine organisms which are publicly available here: https://www.youtube.com/@OceanLizard93. The examples that will be covered in the presentation illustrate my own research as well as the work from other scientists. These include how ecosystem models can help us to study mesopelagic fish, which physiological adaptations allow octopuses to walk outside of the water, and how climate change is affecting Gray whales, among others.
