Global fisheries face escalating threats, with marine biodiversity in decline and coastal communities increasingly vulnerable. Science-based tools are urgently needed to support sustainable management, particularly in regions plagued by overfishing and weak governance. Genetic diversity is a key indicator of species resilience, as higher diversity is often correlated with greater resilience and adaptability to environmental changes. However, overfishing and other anthropogenic pressures diminish genetic diversity, leaving species more susceptible to collapse and necessitating targeted interventions. These challenges are particularly acute in the South China Sea, a biodiversity hotspot under severe anthropogenic threats, where species information remains poorly inventoried, and genetic data—though available—is fragmented and inaccessible due to the lack of a unified platform for consolidation and dissemination.
To address this gap, FishBase—one of the world’s most extensive finfish databases—has partnered with the Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS) at the University of Hong Kong to develop a genetic diversity risk indicator. This simple, user-friendly metric leverages existing genetic data to support fisheries planning and safeguard future food security. Focused on the imperilled South China Sea, the tool empowers fishery managers and stakeholders with actionable insights for informed decision-making.
By consolidating genetic data and fostering collaboration among researchers and stakeholders, this initiative aims to bridge knowledge gaps and enhance our understanding of marine biodiversity. These efforts are essential for supporting collaboration and advancing sustainable fisheries management, ensuring the long-term health of vital ecosystems, and securing livelihoods across the Indo-Pacific region.
