Limited Carbon Fixation Induced by Typhoons over the Northwest Pacific

The passage of typhoons over the Northwest Pacific often leads to a prominent elevation in surface chlorophyll concentration. However, our study demonstrates that such enhancement may primarily result from the vertical redistribution of existing chlorophyll within the upper ocean, driven by strong wind-induced mixing, rather than from new phytoplankton growth supported by nutrient influx. In most cases, typhoon-induced mixing alone fails to penetrate the nutrient-cline, thereby supplying little or no new nutrients to the surface layer. Significant carbon fixation occurs only when a typhoon induces sufficiently deep mixing or upwelling that breaks through the nutrient-cline, introducing substantial nutrients into the euphotic zone and stimulating phytoplankton biomass growth. These findings highlight the limited role of typhoons in enhancing oceanic carbon uptake unless physical disturbances reach and entrain nutrients from below the stratified layer. The study offers new insight for evaluating the impact of strong dynamics on marine carbon cycle.
