摘要
The accuracy of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity forecasts improves slowly due to a variety of complex physical processes involved. The offshore wind industry has developed rapidly in recent years. The expansion of offshore wind farms may introduce additional uncertainty into TC intensity forecasts, but research into their role remains limited. In this study, a series of numerical simulations has been conducted to investigate this issue, including different TC intensities (maximum wind speed, MWS), translation speeds, and tracks. The results indicate that the TC can, counterintuitively, be intensified by the wind farm. The weak (MWS < 38 m/s) and slow-moving TC (20 km/h) is intensified before entering the wind farm (MWS increases by 1.6 m/s). When entering the wind farm, the TC is weakened until 5 hours after the TC center leaves the wind farm. The fast-moving TC (≥ 30 km/h) is intensified after entering the wind farm. For strong TCs (MWS ≥ 44 m/s), the TC is weakened regardless of translation speed or track. The mechanism is that the wind farm induces asymmetric surface pressure anomalies in the TC's eyewall. This induced radial surface pressure gradient alters the boundary-layer inflow, which in turn influences TC intensity.
